I’ve known more than one aspiring author in my lifetime. Offhand, two of them are now published authors.
I myself, have had two poems published, many a moon ago.
If you are any type of writer, whether it’s writing a book, a script, a blog post, an email, a love letter, or anything else, whether you write full time, part time, or whenever you have a moment, then this post is for you.
There’s some advice that I’ve given rather often, whenever someone gets stuck, whether due to actual writer’s block or having too many directions to go, or whatever the reason, and as I recently gave this advice again, so I will share it with you.
Here is my advice: Write. That’s your actual job. You’re a writer. So write.
If you’re stuck on one project, work on a different project. If you’re stuck on the first project, write ABOUT the first project. Or write ABOUT the second project.
Or simply take some paper and write a poem, or write something silly, or write about the parts of your morning routine that you don’t like. It doesn’t really matter what you write.
Just write.
It doesn’t matter if what you’re writing is going to go straight into the trash can.
Your brain is constantly working on problems and sometimes it works better when you’re focused on something else because it needs a break. Your subconscious will continuously work on whatever you’re stuck on, so get your conscious mind working on anything else.
Just write.
Eventually, your brain will make a decision on whatever it was you were stuck on in the first place, so just keep writing, writing about anything, and the decision will be made.
Then you just need to listen to it, but that’s between you and your brain.
Your advice worked for me last weekend.
I had developed an idea, but I determined that it was unwise to publish it.
For a couple days, I didn’t have a second subject. Then an idea popped in my thinking. About 11 hours later, the subject was developed and posted. I feel good about it.
